8-course lute
Michael Lowe, Oxford 1980

The 8-course lute had a relatively short existence around 1600 and my lute is based on a style, which had its origins in Italy around 1580. The main visible characteristic of this style is the use of yew wood for the ribs of the back. Each rib was made from a part of the tree, which comprise both heart and sap wood creating a striped effect.
