Lindberg's playing is faultless and his use of ornamentation is
a real delight. The gut bass strings on his lute lend an extra measure
of authenticity to his interpretations, but his playing is never pedantic,
or dull. Indeed I had the feeling that Dowland might have played the music
like this himself - who knows?…This disc would be an excellent choice
for someone wanting a single disc of Dowland's music…Diana Poulton
would surely be heartened to know that her life's work was continuing
to bear such fruit as this.
The Lute Society Magazine
Selected lute music by John Dowland. This CD was released in memoriam Diana Poulton (1903-1995). She dedicated much of her life to gaining knowledge and understanding of this great English composer. With this selection Jakob Lindberg wishes to express his gratitude for all that Diana Poulton has done for the lute and for our understanding of Dowland's music. The programme comprises pieces that she was particularly fond of. It opens with The Frog Galliard, well-known in the song version Now, O now I needs must part, and ends with Farewell and Tarleton's Riserrectione.
